Tyler, the Creator’s latest style move is grannycore box bags

Tyler, the Creator is one of the few people who can combine and match styles as well as Tyler. It’s difficult for anyone to pin down Tyler, the Creator’s unique look. There’s a preppy, East Coast Country Club aesthetic at the heart of it, mixed in with golfing grandpa sensibilities, skater boi accessories and the odd bit of NBA merch (and the rest).

But Tyler’s a shapeshifter. He’s unpredictable. You never really know what he’ll be wearing next. Right now, it seems like he’s got a thing for sweet ladylike accessories. By that we mean the prim-and proper things Hyacinth Bucket wears. Keep up appearancesWhat you might wear. They’re a bit Thatcher, a bit Princess Margaret: pearl necklaces, diamond earrings, silk scarves, delicately printed neckerchiefs and Cartier Obus watches with delicate leather straps. Not worn together in flowery confection – but always there, if you look closely.

Tyler, the creator was spotted in LA earlier in the week wearing a mustard Cuban collar shirt, brown trousers and penny loafers. His pièce de résistance? A box bag in emerald green lacquered lacquered. Whilst we don’t know who the designer is, it’s the sort of accessory that heritage brands such as Goyard and Launer were made famous for. It was a proud accessory that every social climber, debutant, and young lady wore half a century ago during social season. It is rare to find one today. Tyler is a talented photographer who has a keen eye for beauty.

It’s not the first time that the artist, whose real name is Tyler Gregory Okonma, has shown a fondness for boxy bags. He carried larger versions of the bags to the 2020 Grammy Awards to Wes Anderson-like effect. ‘Lumberjack’, and rolled them out at last year’s BET Awards. Not to mention his collaboration with Globetrotter luggage brand Golf le Fleur last year.

Just as we’re all going hands-free, is it time to bring back this bag from the archive? It’s certainly big enough to fit all of our daily ephemera into. Tyler, the Creator, has gotten us thinking, as always.
