Quite a few of us breathed a sigh of relief when the rain finally starting falling this week, and although the summer is certainly not over yet, autumn doesn’t feel like a wholly unappealing prospect. Non-sweaty train journeys, a proper night’s sleep and the chance to wear a jacket without roasting? Yes please.
Like many style-savvy folk, YOU’s fashion team are already looking to the season ahead, and picking up a couple of key pieces to see them into September with a bang. These are those between-the-seasons picks that can be cosied up for winter as the weather changes, simply by swapping sandals and sunglasses for boots and blazers. Here are their tips for what to buy now…
The YOU fashion team’s autumn picks
Jessica Carroll, Fashion Junior
Woven leather tote, £175, Arket
I’m still dreaming of THAT Bottega Veneta tote, so this Arket lookalike had me running to my nearest store. Despite its unique woven look, it’s super wearable for everyday so will get loads of use.
Cashmere crew neck cardigan, £89, Marks & Spencer
No one does basics like M&S and this simple cashmere cardi is a transitional essential. Wear it open as an extra layer to extend the wear of your summer dresses, or wear it done up with a pair of straight leg trousers for a 90s-inspired look that’s work-appropriate and on trend.
Stephanie Sofokleous, Senior Fashion Assistant
Graphic print oversized jumpsuit, £40, Monki
I love an oversized jumpsuit. I love it even more if it’s boldly printed and monochromatic. This one is striking without the fuss, and will go so well with my 1000 pairs of chunky black sandals.
Sophie Dearden, Fashion Editor
Ribbed stretch-model maxi slip dress, £78, Skims at Net-A-Porter
I have majorly bought into the TikTok hype of this dress, but having tried a few Skims products, nine times out of 10 they deserve the hype! Between the fit that follows your curves, the great full length and chic neckline this is a wear over and over and over again piece.
Linen cut-out waistcoat, £127.20 (was £159), Karen Millen
Great for wearing with a pair of wide leg trousers, sunglasses and sandals in the remainder of this heat, and for dressing up with a cigarette trouser and heel for date night in the autumn. The cut and style of this waistcoat so chic and classic – a forever piece!
Leather riding boots, £250, Cos
I always like to invest in a pair of great boots at the very beginning of the autumn so you get maximum wear! These are great – chic and modern with a classic twist. I will wear them with dresses, mini and midi skirts.
Shelly Vella, Fashion Director
Boucle stripe knit jumper, £41.60 (was £52), Warehouse
For an off-kilter take on a classic striped knit, this jumper brings the wit to your wardrobe. I’d pair it with boyfriend denim at the weekend, or layer it over a starchy collared white shirt and team with wide-cut black trousers to smarten up for work.
Limited edition studded dress, £289, Zara Atelier
Firstly, yes, this is a spenny price tag for Zara but hear me out – this is from their new Atelier collection which focuses on creating limited edition pieces showcasing craftmanship and a more individual approach to dressing. I’d wear it with a black blazer and a cowboy style ankle boot by day and add a vintage heel for evening. It’s undoubtedly an investment piece but oh my, it was certainly love at first sight.
